Elly Varrenti has worked in the arts, media, writing & education industries for over 30 years
Originally training as an actor, singer, theatre director and dramaturge, I began my working life performing with major and independent theatre companies in Melbourne, as well as across television, film and radio.
I later moved into broadcasting, starting in community radio as a theatre reviewer and popular culture commentator, launching fifteen years as a freelance presenter and reporter for ABC Melbourne and ABC Radio National.
For three years, I co-hosted The Conversation Hour with Jon Faine on ABC 774, becoming the program’s first regular guest co-host.
For over a decade, I wrote and performed a series of autobiographical monologues for ABC Radio National’s Life Matters. Those pieces – part audio memoir, part personal reflection – found a wide and devoted audience across Australia.
My writing has appeared in The Age, The Australian Women’s Weekly, Mamamia, Daily Life, The Australian, The Good Weekend, The Big Issue and The Guardian. I was also a long-time columnist for the Australian Education Union’s monthly magazine.
After contributing a personal essay to the anthology How We Met, I signed with Penguin Books, who published my memoir, This Is Not My Beautiful Life. One of my pieces about first love later appeared in the Affirm Press collection She’s Having a Laugh.
Alongside writing and broadcasting, I’ve worked as a theatre critic for The Melbourne Times and The Age. I have taught creative writing at Deakin University and the University of Melbourne and coordinated the Professional Writing and Editing program at Box Hill Institute.
I’m currently working on a new collection of personal essays; You Can Write About Me When I’m Dead.
